Reef Insider - August 2016

Once a year in the lead up to National Science Week, the Foundation’s Science Forum brings together scientists, corporate supporters, government and philanthropists to dive deeper into some of the innovative projects underway to benefit the Great Barrier Reef.

Four researchers told their amazing stories about helping the Reef through science: Dr Emma Kennedy from Griffith University, Dr Peter Harrison from Southern Cross University, James Cook University’s Dr Bill Leggat, and Emmy Award-winning cinematographer and marine biologist Richard Fitzpatrick.

These scientists are finding solutions to some big questions including:

·         How can we create the ideal surface to encourage tiny coral larvae to settle on and grow into a healthy coral reef ecosystem?

·         Can damaged coral reefs be restored using many species of ‘baby’ coral developed in a controlled environment?

·         Is there really a ‘super coral’ that can withstand a changing climate?

·         How can we harness the latest technologies to help restore the habitat of the world’s largest green turtle nesting site and ensure the species’ survival?

There is hope and the consensus was that there is much more that needs to be done to help ensure a Great Barrier Reef for future generations. Thanks to our generous pro bono partner and auditor, Deloitte, for hosting this year’s Science Forum in their Brisbane office.
